How to Identify Carpet Beetles

Carpet beetles are tiny — adults are 2–4 mm, round, and often mottled black, white, and orange. The damage you see is almost always caused by the larvae: fuzzy, brown or tan, “fuzzy caterpillar” shaped, about 4–5 mm long. They leave behind cast (shed) skins that look like tiny brown husks — often the first sign people notice.

Commonly confused with:

  • Bed bugs (carpet beetles don’t bite or feed on blood)
  • Clothes moths (moths leave silken tubes; beetles leave shed skins)
  • Drugstore / pantry beetles (those stay in food, not fabric)

Signs You Have a Carpet Beetle Problem

  • Small irregular holes in wool sweaters, silk, felt, or natural-fibre rugs
  • Shed larval skins in closets, drawers, behind baseboards, or under furniture
  • Adult beetles on windowsills (they’re attracted to light)
  • Bare patches on wool carpets, especially under furniture that doesn’t move
  • Damaged taxidermy, felt piano hammers, or natural-bristle brushes

Where They Hide in Toronto Homes & Condos

Carpet beetles thrive on keratin — wool, silk, fur, feathers, leather, pet hair, and dead insects. Favourite hiding spots:

  • Under and behind area rugs (especially wool)
  • Inside closets — wool coats, suits, knitwear stored long-term
  • Linen closets and under-bed storage
  • Behind baseboards and along carpet edges
  • HVAC vents and dryer lint (full of shed pet hair)
  • Window sills, attics, and dead spaces where wasps or flies have died
  • Condo balconies and bird nests under eaves — a frequent re-entry point

What You Can Do Before We Arrive

A little prep makes treatment dramatically more effective:

  1. Don’t panic-spray. Store-bought sprays scatter larvae deeper into baseboards and fabric — making treatment harder.
  2. Vacuum thoroughly — carpets, rugs, closet floors, under beds, baseboards, vents. Empty the canister into a sealed bag and put it outside.
  3. Bag suspect items. Wool sweaters, scarves, blankets, and anything with visible damage ? sealed plastic bags or bins.
  4. Hot wash or freeze. Launder washables at 60 °C / 140 °F, or freeze dry-clean-only items at ?18 °C for 72 hours.
  5. Move furniture away from walls by about 30 cm so we can inspect and treat edges.
  6. Check the source. Look for an old wool rug, taxidermy, a forgotten bird nest, or dead insects in a window track — the source is often a single item.
  7. Pets: plan to be out with them for 4 hours after treatment.

Our Treatment Process

  1. Inspection — we identify species (varied, furniture, or black carpet beetle), find the source, and map activity.
  2. Targeted treatment — residual insecticide along baseboards, carpet edges, closet floors, and harbourage zones; crack-and-crevice in vents and trim.
  3. Source removal guidance — we’ll flag the item or area driving the infestation.
  4. Follow-up — most cases need one follow-up at 3–4 weeks to break the life cycle (eggs the first treatment didn’t reach).
  5. Written guarantee — if activity returns within the guarantee window, we return at no charge.

Preventing a Return

  • Vacuum high-risk areas weekly for 6–8 weeks after treatment
  • Store wool and silk in sealed bins with cedar or lavender sachets
  • Clean dryer vents and HVAC returns annually
  • Remove bird and wasp nests from eaves, balconies, and window AC units
  • Inspect second-hand rugs, furniture, and taxidermy before bringing them inside
